I Didn’t Think It Would Hit Me So Hard
When my son moved out for good six months ago, I truly did not expect it to affect me the way it did.
As a single parent, I was already used to periods of separation. He spent weekends and half of the school holidays with his father. He had also spent three years away at university, followed by months travelling and working as a model. Because of that, when he told me he was leaving home to live with friends, I accepted it with grace, encouragement, and even pride.
I was genuinely pleased that he felt confident enough to take that step.
The day he moved out was not traumatic at all. There were no tears, no dramatic sense of loss. In fact, I felt positive. I told myself this was my chance to move forward — my opportunity to finally live life for me.
When the Silence Finally Landed
But sometimes, life takes a while to catch up with your emotions.
At first, I carried on as normal. Then slowly, it began to dawn on me: I was very much on my own. For the first time in a long time, I felt completely lost.
It was not just that the house was quieter. It was the unsettling realisation that my role had changed. The daily purpose I had lived with for years had shifted, and I did not quite know who I was without it.
I had spent so much of my life centring my son’s wellbeing. That was my focus. That was what brought me joy. Being his mother was not just part of my identity — in many ways, it was my identity.
And suddenly, I was left wondering:
What now?
My First Attempt to Escape
Like many women facing a major life transition, my first instinct was to do something bold.
I thought seriously about renting out my house and travelling the world for a year. On the surface, it sounded exciting and liberating — the kind of brave, adventurous move that would instantly solve everything.
But the truth is, I had not really thought it through properly.
When that plan failed to come together, I felt even more lost than before. It was as though I had pinned all my hopes on one dramatic solution, only to be left standing exactly where I started — confused, anxious, and without a clear sense of purpose.
Why Did I Feel So Stuck?
This was the question I kept coming back to.
I was single. I was essentially free. I was working as a supply teacher, so I had flexibility. In theory, I had options.
So why did I feel so stuck?
It took honesty to admit that freedom, on its own, is not the same as fulfilment.
Yes, travelling was still something I wanted. But deep down, I knew I needed more than just a change of scenery. I needed a new direction. I needed purpose. And, if I am honest, I also needed greater financial freedom.
I did not just want to fill my time — I wanted to build a life that felt like mine again.
Searching for a New Purpose
That is when I started looking into side hustles I could do while travelling.
I explored so many possibilities. Some were obvious, like online tutoring. Others felt exciting for a moment, but not quite right. I found myself circling around idea after idea, trying to figure out what would give me both flexibility and a sense of meaning.
The truth was, I was not just looking for a job.
I was looking for a fresh start.
I wanted to move away from the version of life I had always known and step into something new — something that belonged to me, not just to the role I had played for everyone else.
But knowing you want change and knowing where to begin are two very different things.
The Turning Point
Somewhere in all that uncertainty, I realised I needed to stop chasing random ideas and start creating something intentional.
That is when I made something for myself — a tool to help me think more clearly about my options, my interests, and what kind of side hustle actually suited the life I wanted to build.
And to my surprise, it worked.
It helped me cut through the overwhelm. It helped me stop guessing. Most importantly, it helped me decide that creating a digital product was the right side hustle for me.
For the first time in months, I felt a sense of clarity.
What Helped Me Move Forward
Overcoming the anxiety of becoming an empty nester did not happen overnight.
It was not one big breakthrough moment. It was a gradual process of accepting that this season of life was asking me to rediscover myself.
I had to stop seeing this chapter as an ending and start seeing it as an invitation.
An invitation to ask:
What do I want now?
What lights me up?
What kind of life do I want to create next?
Once I began focusing on building something for myself, I started to feel less stuck. Less helpless. Less like life had happened to me.
Instead, I began to feel that I could shape what came next.
If You’re Feeling Lost Too…
If you are struggling with empty nest anxiety, please know this:
You are not weak. You are not “past it.” And you are certainly not without purpose.
When your children leave home, it can feel as though the centre of your world has shifted. But that does not mean your life has lost its meaning. It simply means you are being called to find meaning in a new way.
For me, that meant exploring new possibilities, embracing the idea of a side hustle, and eventually creating a digital product that aligned with the freedom and flexibility I wanted.
It did not just give me an idea.
It gave me hope.
What I Created — And Why I’m Sharing It
Because this process helped me so much, I have decided to share what I created.
It helped me move from confusion to clarity. It helped me stop spiralling and start building. And it helped me choose a path that feels exciting, realistic, and full of potential.
If you are in that same in-between place — no longer needed in the same way, but not yet sure what comes next — this may help you too.
Sometimes, the next chapter of your life begins not with a dramatic leap, but with one small, honest decision:
to choose yourself.
